It’s a great feeling when you’ve finally got brand new blinds, it changes the way you feel about the room and gives it a new vibe. We understand you want to keep and maintain their shine, and so we’ve written this guide to help you keep your new blinds in great condition.
Keeping on top of maintenance is crucial to their survival, without care and time they’ll deteriorate much faster than blinds that are kept in good condition. Blinds can make or break the look of a room, the better quality you keep them in, the more noticeable the effort you put into your interior design will be.
We’ll run through a few tips to keep some different types of blinds clean, so you can get it done quickly and get back to admiring your home.
Wooden blinds
Cleaning wooden blinds isn’t as delicate as the name may suggest. Thanks to their sleek finishing, you very rarely get anything other than dust on them. With these blinds, it’s simple enough to just vacuum up the dirt that’s resting on your blinds.
After you’ve done this you should wipe over the blinds with a damp cloth, but then wipe it up with a dry cloth straight away, as if left wet, over time the blind can bend out of place and become disfigured.
Roller blinds
Roller blinds are a more difficult task to do than wooden blinds. You can spot-clean the blinds with a warm wet cloth or sponge, but if that isn’t sufficient you can do the following:
- First, you’ll want to take the blinds from the roller and lay them down.
- Then, you should use the brush attachment on your vacuum to brush over your roller blinds, vacuuming up anything that’s not supposed to be on those blinds.
- If you want to go even further and thoroughly clean them, after the last step you should fill your bath up to the halfway point with warm water.
- Then put detergent into the water and mix it until bubbles start to form. Then place the blinds in the tub and leave them there for a few hours to soak.
- Once a few hours have passed, go back and you can begin to clean the blinds with a sponge.
- Once you’re happy with the job you’ve done, then you can take the blinds out and hang them on a rack somewhere to dry.
Vertical blinds
As good as they look; they’re not the most fun thing in the world to clean. Most people opt to just take them to get dry cleaned. Cleaning your vertical blinds at home is possible, though.
Again, you can always use your vacuum to clean off the dust that’s stuck to your blinds. Use the brush attachment as this gives you more freedom to move and means you don’t have to take the blinds down and clean them. Be gentle, making sure you’re not pulling the blind at all.
If this isn’t sufficient, then you can always use water to clean them. Although, one mistake most people make with cleaning vertical blinds is that they resort straight to hot water like the method to clean roller blinds. We’re here to clear this up for you: Don’t do that.
Vertical blinds can’t be cleaned with hot water as they have plastic brackets that hold them together and clip them onto the top of their frame. If these brackets get too hot when they’re in the water then they’re prone to melting, which warps them and means they may not hook on the
same as they would before. Use water that’s warm enough to not be too hot, just warm enough to help you get the stains out.
Make sure you use a soft detergent that’s also non-bio, this is designed for cleaning soft fabrics; just make sure you check the label to see if it’s right for your blinds.
We’ll leave it with you
Keeping your blinds clean is a difficult task, but it’s also a worthwhile one to keep them in good condition and keep your home happy.
