A question I am often asked by customers is “what is your most popular type of blind?”. My answer is quite simple – vertical blinds! But why is this the case? Indeed vertical blinds are one of the most traditional ranges of blinds, and can be traced back to the beginnings of what we now know as modern window blinds. However, it can be because of this that many people tend to view them in a negative light; “they remind me of blinds my grandma used to have” is a response I hear frequently when I suggest vertical blinds as a possibility, and as they are popular in commercial and office premises, many people see them are merely functional rather than taking the time to consider the design impact they can have upon a room or conservatory.

Due to their enduring popularity, vertical blinds probably have the largest selection of fabrics, colours and patterns out of any of the blind ranges on the market today. A great application for vertical blinds that many people overlook is as a blackout blind. Many people think of roller or roman blinds for darkening their rooms, but vertical blinds work great in this instance too. Granted, they do not provide ‘total blackout’ (very few blinds do), but with a blackout material, they can reduce the light levels in a room by as much as 80%. In my opinion, this gives the user the optimum light levels when the blind is closed; it is dark enough to cut out glare on television/computer screens and make a bedroom dark enough for even the lightest of sleepers, whilst allowing enough light into the room so the occupant can see where they are going!
Vertical blinds are also extremely useful from a privacy/security perspective. Indeed their beauty is that they can be angled just past 45 degrees, which prevents outside people moving past the window from seeing into the room, whilst the occupant can still see out! This helps to keep the room nice and light during the daytime if desired. Further to this, if you are away for the weekend or even a couple of weeks, people do not think twice about looking at a home with vertical blinds closed for a period of time, whereas if you were to leave all your curtains drawn for two weeks it would certainly arouse suspicions that no-one was home! Police often recommend vertical blinds as a burglar deterrent.
